On the Nature of Ultracool White Dwarfs: Not so Cool after All

چکیده

Abstract A recent analysis of the 100 pc white dwarf sample in SDSS footprint demonstrated for first time existence a well-defined ultracool—or IR-faint—white sequence Hertzsprung–Russell diagram. Here we take advantage this discovery to enlarge IR-faint threefold. We expand our selection entire Pan-STARRS survey as well Montreal White Dwarf Database and identify 37 candidates with strong flux deficits optical. present follow-up Gemini optical spectroscopy 30 these systems confirm all them dwarfs. an additional set 33 objects based on their colors magnitudes. detailed model atmosphere 70 newly identified dwarfs together 35 previously known reported literature. discuss physics atmospheres show that key physical ingredient missing previous generation was high-density correction He ? free–free absorption coefficient. With new calculated purpose analysis, now obtain significantly higher effective temperatures larger stellar masses than T eff M values analyses, thus solving two-decade-old problem. In particular, group ultramassive Debye cooling phase parameters never measured before.

Cool versus Ultracool White Dwarfs

A preliminary BV RIJHK analysis of the white dwarfs SSSPM J2231−7514 and SSSPM J2231−7515 is presented. Although both stars were reported to have Teff < 4000 K, the analysis here indicates Teff ≈ 4250 K for both SSSPM J2231−7514 and SSSPM J2231−7515. Given substantial scientific interest in the coolest extant degenerate stars, it is necessary to distinguish sub 4000 K objects from the bulk of c...

Observations of Ultracool White Dwarfs

We present new spectroscopic and photometric measurements of the white dwarfs LHS 3250 and WD 0346]246. Along with F351[50, these white dwarfs are the coolest ones known, all with e†ective temperatures below 4000 K. Their membership in the Galactic halo population is discussed, and detailed comparisons of all three objects with new atmosphere models are presented. The new models consider the e†...

Not so simple after all

Cool Companions to Hot White Dwarfs

Low-mass companions to high-mass stars are difficult to detect, which is partly why the binary fraction for high-mass stars is still poorly constrained. Low-mass companions can be detected more easily however, once high-mass stars turn into white dwarfs. These systems are also interesting as the progenitors of a variety of intensely studied interacting binary systems, like novae, CVs, symbiotic...
